Pakistan strengthens Debt Management Office under IMF conditions

Pakistan's Finance Division has announced a new director general (debt) position at the Debt Management Office, a role it says will oversee the government's debt strategy across both domestic and foreign borrowing while monitoring risks tied to government debt.
According to the Finance Division, the official will advise the government on debt sustainability and on policies affecting economic stability, assess debt-related risks, and help develop strategies for managing Pakistan's borrowing obligations. The position also carries responsibility for input into decisions on domestic debt and the country's wider financial position.
The division said the role involves high-level coordination with the International Monetary Fund and other international financial institutions, as well as communication with investors and credit rating agencies. It said this is intended to improve engagement with major financial stakeholders and strengthen management of Pakistan's debt obligations.
The position has been placed in the SPPS-1 grade, with the Finance Division setting specific eligibility requirements. Applicants must hold at least 16 years of education or a master's degree in finance, economics or a related field, and must have 17 years of professional experience, including five years in a leadership role equivalent to BS-20. Applications can be submitted through the National Job Portal until October 18, 2026.
The appointment comes as Pakistan works to improve its institutional capacity for managing public debt and related financial risks. The Finance Division said the expanded role is expected to support stronger coordination, policy advice and long-term debt sustainability, describing the move as part of wider efforts to strengthen economic stability while meeting commitments under the country's ongoing IMF programme.
