Bitcoin's bond-market cushion falters as $80,000 cost basis comes into focus
A simultaneous Treasury rally and selloff in bitcoin, equities and metals has put the average cost basis of US spot bitcoin ETFs and corporate treasuries under scrutiny, with $80,000 seen as the line to watch.

Bitcoin briefly lost its $81,000 footing on Oct. 22 as Treasuries rallied and risk assets fell together, a combination that undercuts the usual assumption that lower government bond yields ease conditions for digital assets. The Nasdaq fell more than 2%, spot gold dropped about 2.7% to $4,025 and silver sank about 5.8% to near $54.63, while the 10-year Treasury yield fell from 5.146% to below 5% in its biggest one-day drop in more than two years, according to the source material.

The World Gold Council's Oct. 19 Weekly Markets Monitor, titled "Bonds back in the room," noted Treasuries rallying during the Nasdaq decline despite hot inflation and raised the possibility that renewed safe-haven demand for bonds could compete with gold for capital, while acknowledging that lower yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding the metal. The Oct. 22 moves are consistent with that competition story, though price action alone does not establish who was buying; gold ETF flows, real yields and futures positioning would be needed to separate that explanation from others.

Credit markets offered a parallel signal. Meta reported third-quarter revenue of $64.6 billion, up 26%, alongside capital expenditures of $34.9 billion, negative free cash flow of $2.1 billion and a $5 billion increase to the low end of its 2026 capex guidance, now $135 billion to $145 billion. Its shares fell about 8% on Oct. 22 and its five-year credit default swap spread rose 7.6 basis points to a record 114.79, with Oracle's spread near a record and Amazon's near its highest since March 2020. The source cautions that this evidence comes from a few large issuers and that a market-wide credit squeeze would need wider investment-grade and high-yield spread indexes to confirm it.

Oil added to the pressure. Brent crude hit an intraday high of $114.70, its highest reading this year, as renewed Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia raised supply worries. Markets price roughly a 78% chance of a December rate hike while expecting the Federal Reserve to hold on Oct. 28, keeping hike expectations alive and restraining gold's usual lift from falling yields.

Glassnode's Oct. 21 report places the average acquisition cost of US spot bitcoin ETFs near $81,500 and of corporate treasuries near $80,200, with replenished spot bids near $80,000 and the True Market Mean near $77,600; overhead supply runs from $85,000 to $87,500. The S&P Global flash PMIs and the final University of Michigan survey are the first readings that could clarify the split between growth and inflation fears. A daily close below $80,000 would put average ETF and treasury holders at a loss and bring $77,600 into focus, while holding the $80,000 to $81,500 zone would suggest the cost-basis band is absorbing the selloff.
