HSBC's RedCoin stablecoin draws 50,000 users in first week
HSBC group CEO Georges Elhedery said the retail stablecoin signed up 50,000 users in just over a week, crediting Hong Kong's 'comfortable' regulatory environment.

HSBC's retail stablecoin, RedCoin, has drawn 50,000 users in just over a week since its official launch, group CEO Georges Elhedery said at Hong Kong FinTech Week on Monday, as the city's largest lender remains committed to exploring new technologies in the city.

Elhedery, speaking on a panel on the first day of the event, attributed the quick take-up to the "comfortable" regulatory environment provided by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).

The disclosure puts a concrete number on one of the highest-profile bank-issued stablecoin projects to date, and signals that regulated lenders see tokenised settlement and payments as a live commercial line rather than a pilot exercise.

Hong Kong has positioned itself as a hub for digital-asset firms and bank-led tokenisation, with the HKMA running a stablecoin licensing regime and a series of tokenisation trials. The RedCoin figures give the authority an early data point on retail demand under that framework.

The same event also brought news of a new research institution: the global AI & Emerging Technology Institute will be based in the Northern Metropolis and is expected to start operations in early 2027.
