Coinbase's 0.16% XRP 'discount' shrinks to 0.006% once Tether is priced in dollars
A CryptoQuant post called Coinbase's XRP premium an eight-month low. Convert Binance's USDT quote into dollars and almost the entire gap disappears.

Coinbase's XRP price looked about 0.168% cheaper than Binance's at the Nov. 2 close. Price Binance's Tether quote in dollars first, and that gap falls to roughly 0.006% — a difference small enough that fees and spreads would swallow it.

The raw reading came from a Coinbase Premium Index observation of about -0.16% posted on CryptoQuant by the user Arab Chain, who described it as an eight-month low and read it as relatively weaker Coinbase demand. The same post cautioned that the index alone was not definitive evidence of continued downside pressure. The completed Nov. 2 candles put Coinbase XRP/USD at $1.2481, Binance XRP/USDT at 1.2502 USDT and Coinbase USDT/USD at $0.99838.

Multiplying Binance's XRP price by USDT's dollar price and comparing Coinbase against that converted figure narrows the discount across all seven completed UTC daily observations examined, though it does not vanish every day. Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 adjusted discounts stayed at about 0.066% and 0.078%. A separate check of 60 matched one-minute buckets from 12:00 to 12:59 UTC on Nov. 2 put the median raw gap at about -0.128% and the median dollar-adjusted gap at approximately +0.006%.

XRP traded near $1.28 on Nov. 3. Around 13:15 UTC, Coinbase's ticker showed a $1.276 last trade, above its Nov. 2 close, while Binance's rolling ticker showed 1.2780 USDT. A relative-demand warning would carry more weight if a discount survived currency conversion alongside comparatively heavier seller-initiated XRP trading over equivalent windows.

The measurement stops short of an executable arbitrage test. Coinbase defines candle closes as the last trade within each bucket, while Binance's candles use matching time intervals, and rounding, bid-ask spreads, fees and venue differences matter when a residual gap is this small. An August 2025 XRP liquidity study found a similar disconnect: prices stayed closely aligned across Binance and Coinbase even as trading concentrated in different quote currencies. Traders may see near-identical quotes and still face very different execution costs and slippage, particularly in stressed markets.

What it means for Pakistan: For Pakistani traders who watch XRP on offshore venues, the lesson is about the quote currency, not the coin: a USDT pair on Binance is not a dollar price, and converting it before comparing venues can erase most of an apparent discount. With crypto trading still outside formal licensing in Pakistan as PVARA builds out its VASP framework, retail users here typically reach these platforms through peer-to-peer and offshore accounts, where spreads and conversion costs are wider than the fractions measured here — so a gap this small is unlikely to survive the trip.
