Anthropic files to go public as its CEO warns AI could threaten humanity
Anthropic filed papers on Monday to sell shares to the public for the first time, a listing that could be the biggest initial public offering of stock ever — even as its chief executive warns that advanced artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity.
The Claude developer said in its regulatory filing that it will list on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol "ANT." The 335-page document showed revenue growing rapidly, but the company has yet to turn a profit: it reported a net loss of US$80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, against a loss of $13 billion in the same period a year earlier.
Private investors valued Anthropic at $965 billion earlier this year, and its value is reportedly set to rise to $1.5 trillion or possibly $2 trillion, although its final valuation has not been established. At $1.5 trillion, it would rank among the world's most valuable public companies, alongside Tesla. The offering could raise as much as $100 billion, which would surpass the record $86 billion SpaceX raised in June. The amount the company ultimately raises, its final valuation and the offering price all remain uncertain.
The filing lands weeks after CEO Dario Amodei argued in an essay for slowing the development of the most advanced AI models. An IPO could give Anthropic enormous resources to accelerate its expansion instead, and could add billions to the wealth of Amodei and his sister and co-founder, Daniela. It would also put Anthropic ahead of rival OpenAI in reaching public markets, in what is expected to be a pair of blockbuster debuts for the two AI labs.
