What is a mutual fund, and how do I choose one in Pakistan?

A mutual fund pools money from many investors and a professional manager invests it in shares, bonds, money-market instruments or a mix. Each investor owns units, and the value of a unit (its net asset value, or NAV) is published every working day.

Funds let you spread risk across many investments with a small amount of money. Money-market funds are the lowest-risk and suit cash you may need soon; equity funds invest in shares and can rise or fall sharply; income and balanced funds sit in between. Shariah-compliant versions exist for each.

In Pakistan, funds are run by asset management companies licensed by the SECP. MUFAP, the industry association, publishes every fund's returns, fees and risk level in one place, which makes comparing them easy.

Compare funds of the same type, over several years rather than one, and look at the fees, which come out of your returns every year. Past returns never guarantee future ones.
