Swiss National Bank books 44.2 billion franc nine-month profit on gold and foreign assets
The SNB's foreign-currency pile, including its equity portfolio, earned 43.3 billion francs, with gold adding 1.2 billion. The result raises the odds of a year-end payout to the Swiss government and cantons.

The Swiss National Bank's gold vault and its foreign-currency portfolio earned it 44.2 billion francs (US$5.4 billion) in the first nine months of the year, the central bank said, a result that raises the likelihood of a year-end payout to the Swiss government.

The bulk of the gain came from the SNB's holdings of assets denominated in foreign currencies, including its large equities portfolio, which delivered a profit of 43.3 billion francs. The value of the central bank's gold holdings rose by 1.2 billion francs. Positions in Swiss francs added a further 0.1 billion francs, a figure that includes the negative interest the SNB charges on oversized commercial-bank reserves held with it since it cut its benchmark rate to zero last year.

The SNB is explicit that its results do not influence monetary policy and are heavily driven by asset price moves, with quarterly numbers often having little bearing on the final figure for the year. The stakes are nonetheless fiscal: the profits matter to the federal government and to Switzerland's cantons, and in years of losses the central bank can at times make no payout at all, a squeeze felt hardest by smaller regions.

The nine-month result lands as investors weigh how much further gold and global equities can run, the two forces that dominate the SNB's balance sheet. For a central bank whose balance sheet is many times the size of the Swiss economy, the profit is a reminder of how much of its fiscal contribution rests on markets rather than policy.
