Lucky Cement adds 3.2 MTPA at Karachi, lifting Pakistan capacity to 18.8 MTPA

Lucky Cement will add 3.2 million tonnes a year of cement capacity at its Karachi plant, lifting its installed capacity in Pakistan to 18.8 MTPA, the company told the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday. The board approved the brownfield projects on 28 October; they are due to start commercial operations by December 2027 and will be bolted onto a grinding facility already being installed at the site.
The Karachi plant alone will grow to 8.55 MTPA once the work is done, the company said, and combined with its Pezu plant the group's Pakistan capacity will reach 18.80 MTPA. Lucky Cement attributed the decision to domestic demand and growing exports of cement and clinker, and said it expects to reinforce its position as the country's largest cement manufacturer and exporter.
The board also signed off on a package of captive energy projects. At Karachi these are additional wind turbines totalling 22.5 MW and a 10 MW waste heat recovery plant; at Pezu, a 15 MW solar plant and a 15 MW battery energy storage system. Together they are expected to cover about 60% of the cement operations' energy needs, including the new Karachi line, with completion scheduled between the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027 and the second quarter of fiscal 2028.
Add the ongoing expansion at Nyumba Ya Akiba in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Lucky Cement's consolidated capacity across Pakistan and overseas is expected to reach 26.65 MTPA, the filing said. For readers watching Pakistan's listed industrial names, the plan pairs a volume bet on construction demand with a push to cut grid exposure through self-generated renewable power.
